The Confederate monument was dedicated on July 21, 1881. More than 5,000 people attended the dedication ceremonies.
Of the 568 men buried under the mound, 525 were known Confederate soldiers, 39 were though to have been Confederate and four are Yankee soldiers.
There are 129 soldiers buried here from Georgia, 114 from South Caroline, 97 from Virginia. The list continues with the number for other states. There were 354 who died of disease and only 80 died of gunshot wounds.
Attended the memorial services were Virginia and Nelson Deal from Culpeper. Nelson Deal’s great uncle is one of the two Rappahannock soldiers who are buried under this mound. Stephen C. Dodson was a private in the 49th Infantry, Co. K.
He was a native of Rappahannock County. He entered the service at Culpeper Court House on July 18, 1861. This company was also known as the Sperryville Sharpshooters.
