A volcano erupted in Castleton 702 million years ago where Big Battle Mountain now exists.
Big Battle and Little Battle Mountains are located on the east side of Route 729 in Castleton.
Dr. Richard P. Tpllo, assistant professor of geology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., has been bringing geology students to Castleton over the last ten years to study the distinctive granite and other rocks which make up the Big Battle and Little Battle Mountains. Some of his students have done their master’s theses in this area. The granite |is part of a much larger group of rocks called the Robertson River Suite, which extends from Ashby Gap in northern Virginia to the Charlottesville area, a distance of 65 miles.
