The new high school attendance policy ran into a buzz saw of opposition from a group of parents Monday night.
Superintendent David Gangel, assistant superintendent Mary Ann Biggs and high school principal Jack Raines were on hand to explain how the policy was adopted and to listen to comments.
At the high school this year there is no distinction between excused and unexcused absences, and attendance counts for 10 percent of the grade.
Dr. Gangel explained that the policy was adopted because attendance has become a growing problem for the schools.
He said the administration wanted to hear from the parents. "The regulation is not carved in stone,” he said.
Mrs. Biggs explained that a committee of parents, teachers and administrators met for a period of months to draft a policy to deal with the problem. Mrs. Biggs said they did not find that students with high absences did poorly in school, in fact, they included some of the top students.
