Goldrinches are splotchy. Grey feathers show through the yellow, as the feather tips are worn away. This is a part of a molting and feather renewal process. Even the Cardinal has a wet, unkept look and House Finches are downright ratty looking. Only Chickadees and Titmouse have a nearnormal look.
