She said when she called schools that have good attendance she found that a lot of them have policies that if a student misses a certain number of days, frequently five, they will fail for the semester. She said the committee did not want to adopt that policy.
Mr. Raines said it had become more and more difficult to deal with the absences. He said by the end of the first semester last year more than 180 students had already missed 10 or more days of school. In the past, students could make up work missed because of excused absences but not unexcused ones. Mr. Raines said the school wants all students to make up missed work.
Last year on the Friday before Labor D<iy 15 students were absent. This year only three were, he said.
Most of the parents present objected to counting days missed because of illness the same as playing hooky or taking away from the grade of a student who missed classes because of a medical appointment. They said they do hot let their children miss school unless they are really sick.
