The rain and wind began before daybreak on Friday, and before long roads were being closed due to high .water, trees were falling, blocking roads and taking down power lines with them, and bridges were awash with flood waters. The North Fork of the Thornton River jumped its banks, flooding Route 612 in Old Hollow and rushing down the road to flood U.S. 211. Volunteer firemen Greg Williams and John Jenkins were there to divert traffic to the eastbound lane of U.S. 211 during the afternoon.
Dieter Knuepfer, emergency services coordinator, said that the river in Old Hollow was 300 feet wide at the second bridge on Route 612; it is normally about 20 feet wide. The Thornton River raged through Sperryville, pouring over the bridges at Route 667 and 1001 by the rescue squad. A mudslide closed Route 603, on the Hughes River, in the southern end of the county.. . '
Sheriff Gary Settle said dial he Was impressed how everyone from the Sheriffs Office,' fire and rescue personnel, VDOT, State Police, Col. Knuepfer and others worked together to handle the storm.
