Jazz from the Swing Era — popular music of the 1930s and the 1940s — opens the new season of live performances at the Theatre at Washington at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Unified Jazz Ensemble promises and evening of music including works of Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin.
Leader of the United Jazz Ensemble is Mike Noonan who plays trombone and vibes. He says that "although we're a younger group as jazz musicians go — we’re all 35 — we share a special respect and love for jazz, which is one of the great American art forms." Many of the popular songs of the 1930s and 1940s were not originally written as jazz, Mr. Noonan notes, but they were adapted almost contemporaneously by jazz musicians playing at the time. They are now firmly established as staples in the jazz repertoire.
The Unified Jazz Ensemble has been playing together professionally for about five years. Fore the past four years they have worked as full time artists-in-residence for the National Endownment for the Arts. They have given concerts in fifteen states and toured Japan, Korea and Canada. They
