The Republican Party and its candidates are now committed to working for a Constitutional Amendment which declares that an unborn child is a person entitled to the same equal protection of the laws as every other person, as provided by the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution.
This would mean that a doctor who performed an abortion would be guilty of homicide, and that a woman who paid a doctor to perform an abortion could be guilty of hiring a murderer. No exceptions are made for cases of rape or incest or to save the life of a mother.
History tells us that an immediate result of such an amendment would be to relegate thousands of American women to back-alley abortionists.
