Some deputies worked 20 hours on Saturday, said Major MacWelch, and a total of 176 hours of work time were attributed to Hurricane Fran, he said —" time spent answering calls from people in need, closing off roads, even cutting up trees that were blocking the road. Col. Knuepfer's job includes doing damage assessments of the county and sending reports in to Richmond, which he said he sent in on Saturday. He cautions people who have private wells that have been flooded to have their water tested before drinking it. The Health Department can he,lp with that, he said. Also, septic systems that are exposed should be checked.
Superintendent Ron Marshall of VDOT said that Peola Mills and Harris Hollow were the hardest hit areas of the county. However, residents of Old Hollow will probably disagree with that assessment. More rain was recorded in Sperryville than in Washington.
"The really bad rains stayed along the mountain and Harris Hollow,” Mr. Marshall said. Though 28 roads were ^ closed at one time Or another during the storm, almost all are open now. Mr. Marshall said that Route 601 in Peola Mills is barely passable and half of the road is gone, so local residents are using Route 707 instead. The bridge on Route 601 was closed prior to the . storm because it is being repaired.
