Librarian David Shaffer reported to the Library Board last Thursday on the library's recovery from a computer crash that happened Nov. 1.
"The entire circulation catalog had to bfe downloaded onto disks and sent to Winnebago, our library software vendor, to be restored," he noted. "This process took 12 days, during which time all check-in and check-out transactions had to be recorded on paper forms."
He said Winnebago was able to restore everything with the exception of approximately 5,000 subject entries which jvere lost and some that are "scrambled." "This means that when a patron does a subject search, the computer may respond with a list of materials that are unrelated to that subject. It will take some more monitoring of the system to determine how widespread this problem is, and I'm working with Winnebago to try and remedy it," Mr. Shaffer reported.
He had high praise for Betty Smith and Ellen Pullen Who entered the records of all the check-ins and check-outs that occurred when the system is down saying Mrs. Smith "is the fastest typist in the West."
