Kwanzaa was established in 1966 by Maulana Karenga. Karenga belieyed that African-Americans as well as all decendents from the African people needed a time for the reflection of the "self " or individual person and "cultural affirmation."
He studied African and East African harvest and tribal traditions to establish the foundation of Kwanzaa. The word Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili word Kwanza "first fruits of the harvest".
Today more than 5 million people in the United States and 13 million worldwide participate in the celebration of this annual holiday.
