The Jewish people went to work repairing the temple and planning a rcdedieation eercmony. In Hebrew. Hanukkah means dedication.
In the temple, the Jews had trouble finding oil to light the menorah for the dedication ceremony. Finally, they found the holy oil. but only enough to last one day.
I lie oil miraculously burned for eight days, leading Jews to declare, "A miracle happened here."
To commemorate the rcdedieation and the miracle. Hanukkah is today celebrated lor eight nights. One candle on the nienorah is lit each night of Hanukkah, a holiday where children play traditional games, eat special lood and sing songs.
Coins and chocolate coins, called gelt, are the traditional Hanukkah gift. The practice ol giving Hanukkah gelt, the Yiddish word lor money, probably began in 17thcentury Poland, when parents gave children money lor their teachers on Hanukkah. Later, Polish parents gave children their own money as well.
As Jews came in contact with more Christians, they were influenced by the custom ol Christmas presents. Instead of Hanukkah gelt, most of today's American Jews give their children one present on each night of Hanukkah. - -
