In those regions where tobacco is grown, politicians — or at least those who want to Win — tend to side with the industry. For instance, when Democrat Virgil Goode and Republican George Landrith competed for a vacant 5th Congressional District seat this fall, each had only gqod things to say about tobacco. Indeed, Goode — who won — has been one of the industry's best friends in the state legislature for years.
Both Beyer and Gilmore take certain risks in their respective stands. Gilmore will probably be strengthen d in the Richmond area and other areas of the state around Danville, Martinsville and Lynchburg by his protective attitude toward the industry. But he could be hurt in regions such as Northern Virginia where the antismoking, anti-tobacco lobby is strong.
By contrast, Beyer, who is from Northern Virginia, could be hurt in those parts of .the state where tobacco is still a major part of the economy. He tried to claim after his attack on
