With the harvest complete, it is time to give thanks. But we • have so much more than plentiful food to be thankful for.
In Rappahannock we also have plenty of physical beauty as the constantly unfolding seasons play themselves out in our mountains. The starkness of hillsides of tree bfanches denuded of leaves has its own beauty as we await the coming of winter. Shorter days mean almost anyone can catch the early morning or late afternoon sun turning those hillsides golden.
Last week's snowfall brought another manifestation of that beauty, lacy trees holding up piles of wet flakes. The approaching winter skies, bluer than in warmer weather, and winter nights with stars so much brighter.
However, it is not really the nature of our scenery but the nature of our people which particularly blesses us.
Recent issues of the Rappahannock News bring stories of county citizens volunteering to plan events to memorialize the 200th Birthday of the Town of Washington, others preparing for two performances of "The Shepherds' Play,'Vothers planning to - help out the day care center with its Christmas Bazaar, others >vho have made a new Senior Citizens Center a reality. ! The scanner in the News office hums constantly with calls for i volunteers to respond to emergencies in our homes and on our roads. Volunteers plan to monitor the health of our streams, keep bur high school athletes in uniforms, keep our churches going and provide leadership to support oui; youth. Most issues of the newspaper contain stories bylined by contributing writers. These too are volunteers, who help our small staff see that news of the whole community included. The total effect of all this is truly amazing.
Even more important than the willingness of county citizens to volunteer officially is their willingness to support one another in times of need. Your editor feels particularly grateful for the supportive nature of the Rappahannock community this fall.
Those who live in Rappahannock County have much to be . thankful for.
