The celebration of Kwanzaa is directed by the observance of the Nguzo Saba or seven principles.
Each day of the holiday is marked by the lighting of red, green or black candles. This honor is usually reserved for the youngest child in a family.
During the lighting of the candles each member of the family meditates and reflects upon Nguzo Saba as described by Karenga in 1965. The seven principles are:
