they are bringing so little on the feeder market. That will eventually mean the supplies are built back up. Mr. Massie said he is considering keeping back some of his heifers. "It's hard to know whether to get smaller or get bigger," he said.
Mr. Massie says, "I sure hope it gets better. I see the declining price of beef cattle as the number one threat to Rappahannock County. If people can make money raising cattle, there is not near the pressure to subdivide the land."
He notes that the drop in prices followed years when prices were very good, when farmers were able to purchase new equipment, build new fences and expand their herds. He notes prices of nearly $1 per pound lasted several years. "I don't think that was a fluke; I think it's a sustainable price," he said.
