Each season is special in Rappahannock County. Winter has its own appeal.

The lush foliage of summer is long gone, and the once green leaves add to the thick brown carpet on the forest door. The lack of leaves reveals gray rocks and bare gaunt hills now visible through the see-through trees. In every direction the naked landscape stretches steeply upward from the valley floor.

There are few visitors from the outside world, including county weekenders. The trailhead in our backyard, a popular summertime attraction, still attracts an occasional hardy hiker heading for Skyline Drive. But the sound of an approaching vehicle winding up our narrow road almost always means a visit from a friend, and not a stranger for the non-existent parking lot.

The stream is now a tiny brook, the floods of yesteryear just a memo
