ad valorem taxes on my woodland when I wouldn't be similarly taxed on other forms of wealth into which I could convert that woodland? Why do Virginia local governments tax real estate, automobiles, and boats — but not bank accounts, mutual funds (these days a potential mother lode revenue source), gold coins and antique clocks? These questions seem particularly relevant at a time when we are constantly creating new avenues of investment.
No, I don’t advocate taxing other forms of wealth (we learned years ago that Virginians can't seem to remember what they own or what it's worth).
