Library Board
Approves Budget,
Driveway Specs
The Library Board approved specifications for paving the driveway and parking areas and a budget for the coming year at their January meeting last Thursday.
The board has a promise of up to $20,000 for the paving project from the Friends of the Rappahannock Library. There is also some money in a building fund that could go to this project.
The specs call for bids for the paving to be received by Feb. 24. The Library Board is hoping to have the work done in March or April.
The board approved a budget for next year of $96,673, up $2,944 from the current budget. The budget requests an additional $1,670 from the county. It is based on an additional increase of $1,600 from the endowment fund. State revenue is projected to decrease $326.
Most of the increase would go to salary increases of three percent for three employees and six percent for the director.
Board president Roberta Anderson explained this will bring the library director’s salary to just over $25,000 per year, which is still slightly less than the county pays a new teacher with a masters degree.
Mrs. Anderson, vice president Frank Warner, treasurer Helen Platt and secretary John Hartline were reelected unanimously.
Librarian David Shafer reported that work continues on unscrambling the subject entries for the library’s collection. Following a computer crash all the subject entries were mixed up.
Board member John McCarthy said he will miss the confusion. "I rather enjoyed the Zen search process,” he said. "You could enter turtle' and get ’camel' and wonder why 'camel' was in there.”
Mr. Shafer said that the computer used at the circulation desk should be replaced. He will have a report on what is needed for the February meeting. He said the Friends organization may be willing to pay for the new computer.
