Marine Lance Cpl. James , H. Rothrock, son of Roselyn F. and Jarjies H. Rothrock IV of Castleton, is currently completing a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Seas with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), embarked aboard the ships of the USS Saipan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).

Cpl. Rothrock, along with more then 2,000 Marines of the 24th MEU, departed their home base of Camp Lejeune, N.C., in June. The USS Saipan ARG includes the amphibious assault and flag ship USS Saipan, the amphibious transport dock ship USS; Austin and the dock landing ship USS Gunston Hall. '■

In July, the 24th MEU took part in multinational training for noncomt>atant evacuation, and humanitarian and maritime operations. The exercise, conducted in Romania, was designed to test inter-operability between NATO and partner nations' naval forces in conducting joint peacekeeping exercises. ■'

The 24th MEU is trained to ev4cuate civilians, rescue downed pilots, conduct reconnaissance and serve as an initial landing force ashore. 1

So far during the deployment, Cpl Rothrock and fellow service members have visited France and Romania.1
