will be to the Robinson River in the White Oak Canyon and Cedar Run trail areas near Berry Hollow.This area was severely affected by Hurricane Fran and experienced numerous shifts in its lower banks and bed.The Robinson runs into the Rapidan before becoming a part of the Rappahannock.
Additional hikes scheduled as part of the series include the Hughes River, the Hazel River, the North and South forks of the Thornton River, the Piney River, the Covington River, the Rush River, the Jordan River and the Rappahannock.
There may be an additional hike or two offered, including moonlight hikes and possibly an overnight campout, and also a canoe trip. People who are unable to make the hikes are welcome to join the round-table discussions afterwards.
The Ragged Mountain Resource Center is also coordinating a Volunteer Water Monitoring Network in Rappahannock County in cooperation with the county 4-H, the county government, the Izaak Walton League, and the Piedmont Environmental Council. This monitoring effort will be based on the "Save Our Streams" program of the Izaak Walton League and will include quarterly tests at consistent sites around the county.
Organizational meetings for the project will take place at the county 4-H office (675-3619) on Gay Street in Washington from 10 a.m. to noon every third Saturday of the month, and monitor training sessions will take place several times over the course of the year including the March meeting.
