New Area Code

Starting Saturday, Feb. 1, the new 757 telephone area code for the Eastern Shore and Hampton Roads area will become mandatory.

For the past six months it has been possible to reach telephones in that area by using either the new 757 or the old 804 area code. Now only 757 will work.

Increased use of computer communications, cellular phones, fax machines and pagers caused the demand for phone numbers to explode resulting in the need to divide the 804 area code. r -1

Charter School

Vote Tied

Speakers this week strongly urged the House Education Committee to reject charter schools, calling them elitist instruments that would promote segregation. Committee members voted 11-11 Friday, causing the issue to die in committee.

"To me, it's the creation of two school systems — and I have experienced two school systems — one equal and the other not equal," said John Edward McNeil Sr. of Henrico County, an NAACP member who spoke at the public hearing earlier in the week.

This is the fourth consecutive year the charter school bill has been introduced in the legislature. Proponents say charter schools would give local school systems more choice and accountability.

Church Insurance

Debated

Insurance companies and churches disagree about a proposed bill prohibiting insurers from refusing to renew a church policy after arson.

The bill, sponsored by Del. Eric Cantor, R-Henrico, was in response to complaints by churches that insurers refused to renew policies after last year's wave of arson attacks.

Insurers said Del. Cantor's bill would cause companies to stop offering coverage to churches in the first place and could force premium rates up.
