Young Firemen
■I. The county is fortunate that many youngsters think it is "cool" to be volunteer firemen and rescue squadsmen.
While many want to be paid eventually for the skills they are acquiring by working in jurisdictions with paid fire and rescue squads, for the time being Rappahannock residents can benefit from their training at no cost. ; The training the are getting includes quite a variety of skills both iji medical life saving and in fighting fires. Last week several proved they have learned how to handle spills of hazardous materials. Some of the training has come at George Washington Carver-Piedmont Technical Center. Other training has been arranged through the local volunteer departments. • -All of this training is valuable, but the most valuable lesson the yopng men are learning is that giving service to others is its own reward.
For years we have heard that the departments are having trouble recruiting new volunteers. That is still true, but the county's teenagers are taking some of the pressure off and having some rewarding fun in the process.
School Water
l ;Both schools have been having problems with their water systems, and students are drinking bottled water. At both schools the - water has sometimes tested positive for coliform bacteria. To some thisjs alarming. To others the prospect of having to drink chlorinated water is even more alarming. ; The schools are :ng to be forthright in -notifying the public of their problems. Some people will always question whether they have been forthright enough. Like the decision on when to close school because of weather, those who are able to operate with 20-20 hindsight will iilways have the advantage.

Those who walk and drive in the streets of Washington have another reason to be grateful. Last week VDOT finally got around to putting material along the shoulders of the roads, and the four to six-ipch drops at the edge of the new asphalt have been eliminated. . In places more fill is needed, but the worst of the problem is gone.
