stands guard over the beacon of the} Milky Way. In the far off distance a} mournful train whistle sounds. I have' heard it before on other cold nights.* Through some acoustic anomaly it} travels from the Shenandoah Valley at; Luray, over the peaks of the Blue* Ridge, and down into our valley. }

The next day a 3-inch January} snowfall coats the ground, turning the J landscape into a stark contrast of black * and white. Near dusk I walk slowly upr the trail, alone but not lonely, leaving} virgin tracks in the white expanse. The' winter air smells cold and fresh. I look! for bear tracks but find none. A pileat-} ed woodpecker peers at me from behind a tree, and then flies off, a flash of red, black, and white. ' 3

Day is turning into night. 1 shiver} in the deepening cold and head back to* the house. Soon I see the welcoming* lights shining in the dusk. Inside is warmth, companionship, love.
