Two teenage girls lost their lives as the result of a wreck on Route 729 in Amissville last Wednesday night.
The accident, which has saddened the whole county, killed Mary Beth Williams, 18, of Flint Hill, and Tori Leigh Smoot, 19, of Rixeyville, when Tori’s 1995 Toyota Camry slammed into a large walnut tree. Ms. Smoot was driving and Ms. Williams was a passenger in the front seat.
According to Lucy Caldwell of the Virginia State Police, the girls were southbound on Route 729, .4 mile north of Rt. 618, when they topped the crest of a hill, lost control of the car, slid off the left side of the road and hit the tree. Despite the use of seat belts and airbags, the two didn’t survive. Ms. Caldwell said that Trooper C.A. Moore said that he felt they may have been in excess of safe speed when they crested the hill.
Mary Beth was pronounced dead at Fauquier Hospital that night, and Tori was airlifted to Fairfax Hospital where she later died.
Mary Beth was a senior at Rappahannock County High School and was due to graduate on June 7. A longtime resident of the county, Ms. Williams was involved in many extracurricular and volunteer activities and was highly respected by the community and fellow students.
