A total of $ 175,000 was shaved off the school budget at the May 13 meeting of the school board, as directed by the Board of Supervisors in their May 5 meeting.
Dr. David Gangel, Superintendent of Schools, presented his proposed budget reductions to the school board and they were approved.
The first items to go were $60,000 for RCHS roof replacement and $6,500 for RCHS roof consultant and work inspector (the Board of Supervisors had decided these should be cut and left the remaining $108,500 for Dr. Gangel and the school board members to decide on).
The next largest item cut was $32,602.45 for three-day curriculum inservice, followed by $29,268.86 for two positions for remedial aides plus benefits, and $20,000 for special education professional services (OT/PT).
Other cuts are in Extended Day Program: (Teachers, $2,080; Related FICA, $159.12; Bus Drivers $6,624; and Related FICA $506.74); Activity Bus, $1,625.45; Related FICA $124.35; Central Office Copier Lease, $6,144; RCHS guidance computer, $2000; RCHS library equipment, $4,415.03; and RCHS office of the principal equipment, $2,950.
Board member Bryant Lee said he felt the Board of Supervisors was very gracious in the amount they did cut. “I think we can live with this the way it is right here.”
Mr. Makela pointed out that the board had taken a very close look at the budget and it was a very difficult decision on their part.
