School safety is an on-going concern of the system. The system remains vigilant and quick to respond to potential safety risks. For example, periodic canine searches for drugs and weapons will continue to insure a safe school environment. The hiring process within the school has changed to focus on the characteristics of what makes a superior teacher. The system is also screening teachers on the basis of what is important to parents and students as well as the factors which, research shows, are contributing strengths to becoming an outstanding teacher. And finally, our teacher evaluation instrument has changed to include all elements which contribute to a superior teacher.
In addition, RCES accepts and tries to honor parental requests for teachers through grade five. Parent requests are accepted through the month of May.
The elementary school was the first Rappahannock school to start the improvement process related to parent satisfaction. The progress of the elementary school is impressive. Each spring, an anonymous sample of parents complete a parental satisfaction survey. The improvement trend of overall parental satisfaction over the past five years is shown in the graphic.
