Mr. Weaver said he has been a jackof-all-trades. “I’ve done a little of everything, that’s for sure.” He began when he was a boy working on area farms. He shod horses for a while and was also a carpenter. He remembers working for Charles Breeden driving the caterpillar up the mountain and pulling logs out to take down to the saw mill.
“I believe the county was better years back,” he said. “Things were cheaper and people were nicer it seems to me.” He said the worst thing that ever happened here, as far as he’s concerned, was when they turned the old quarry in Amissville into a dump.
“It was a real problem here for people. The smoke would choke you and they couldn’t get the fires out because it was so deep. They even threw dead animals in there,” he said. He feels the best thing that happened here was when the county decided to do away with the dump there.
Even at 100, Mr. Weaver relishes his independence. “I’ve been living by myself now for the last 20 years,” he said. “I do my own mowing, laundry and cooking. I cant’ see to good anymore but I still do what I want.”
