feet from me. The bird threw back his head and cast his loud notes into the air. To this day, that memory flows through the years and is as bright and intense as when it happened.

Since that summer, I have seen the golden swamp warbjer along the turgid waters of the Yadkin River in central North Carolina near my home. There it sang from the leafless branches of a drowned tree standing in the water. When Lee Trott and I lived in McLean, Virginia, we made an annual spring pilgrimage to hear, then see, this bright bird along the tow path at Seneca, Maryland.

During my years at the Madeira School near McLean, a Prothonotary Warbler chose to nest in a bluebird box I had placed on a pole in the shallows of Black Pond, a small lake near the Potomac. That seemed a special gift.

The woods and fields of the upper Virginia Piedmont climb and dip through a variety of altitude; this results in splendid diversity of plant life.

This diversity results in many species of birds for each species has its preference for the habitat which altitude and plants determine. Surely a pair of golden swamp warblers has taken up residence along some stream or at the edge of some pond created by beavers.
