Big things begin with small starts. Symphonies begin with a single note. Giant oaks begin with a little acorn. Mighty rivers start with a trickle on a hillside.
Here in Rappahannock County, a few citizens have come together to take the first step toward what we hope will become a public movement that could hold enormous benefit for our children and grandchildren. This small group has formed an organization dedicated to excellence in public education, with the ambitious goal of making Rappahannock County’s public schools the very best in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
For a tiny, rural county like Rappahannock to aspire to such educational greatness may seem like a foolish dream. But it is not impossible, and lofty achievement arises only from ambitious aims. Besides, Rappahannock County’s very smallness is in some sense an advantage, for its makes our problems more manageable and makes it easier to unite the entire community behind a worthy public goal.
The new organization is Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation. Established in January, after more than a year of planning and research by a steering committee of local volunteers, the foundation has been formed to provide independent, private, community support to our public schools. The foundation will be a non-profit, non-partisan, tax-exempt organization thUt id independent of the public school administration, but will strive to build a long-lasting partnership with county schools.
The foundation’s stated purpose is “fo foster educational excellence by cultivating the cooperative spirit and resources of the whole community to benefit all students.” Simply put, we
