The statewide survey under Virginia’s “Outcome Accountability Project” last year painted a picture not flattering to Rappahannock schools. This year should see an improvement.
However, on some measures of performance, the county’s schools score higher than the statewide average: the high school’s dropout rate is less than half the state average (two percent vs. five percent) and the percentage of county high school graduates who earned an advanced studies diploma is higher than the Virginia average (58 percent vs. 49 percent).
The report also shows:
• A much smaller proportion of Rappahannock County students were taking a foreign language or algebra prior to ninth grade — two key measures of how well public schools are preparing students for college. With the new SOL this will also change since those subjects will be required prior to ninth grade.
• Student attendance at school was poorer in Rappahannock County than statewide, with a larger portion of all students recording 10 days or more absent from school. In the county, 65 percent of students in all grades were absent from school 10 days or less, compared to 73 percent statewide.
• Rappahannock students are less likely to score high on standardized tests compared to Virginia students statewide. Among 11th graders, fbr example, 22 percent of the county’s high school juniors ranked in the top one-quarter of students nationally on such tests, while 33 percent of all Virginia 11th graders achieved that high ranking. A similar deficiency was also recorded for county 8th graders. Dr. Gangel hopes that with the new training being implemented this statistic will also change.
