cial support to launch educational initiatives that will enhance the educational programs of our schools. These could include such things as small grants to teachers for special projects, support for learning workshops involving both parents and student, or event school beautification projects. Foundation support also could come in the form of Volunteerism and gifts of goods and services.
The foundation definitely will not be a source of funds to supplant tax revenues. It will not raise private money for general support of the school system or to offset lost public revenues. Any funding offered by the foundation will be a supplement to, not a replacement of, public funding through taxes.
Our mission goes well beyond fund-raising and grant-giving, however. At least as important is the goal of reawakening the community to the value of public education, and reinvigorating public interest, volunteerism, and just plain public appreciation of the schools. Quality public education is essential to our democratic society and to the prosperity of our economy. It is crucial to our children’s ability to succeed and compete in an intensely competitive world economy. Excellent schools are the key that will unlock the future for them.
The dedicated teachers, administrators and others in the Rappahannock County public school system are doing their best to meet this challenge. They are being helped by many individual volunteers, local businesses and community organizations that for years have assisted our schools in many ways, donating time, energy, services and supplies. All these school supporters need our help.
Headwaters is one instrument by which the citizens of Rappahannock County can support quality educatior through tax-deductible contributions. Ir the months ahead, we hope to raise sufficient funds to announce initial grants that will become a down payment or our commitment to the long-range part nership we seek with our schools.
