Tori, who died one day before her 20th birthday, graduated from Culpeper High School,
The spot where the accident occurred is directly across the road from the scene of another fatal accident which took place on April 20, 1996, and in which Brandon Hudsonpillar, a 1991 RCHS graduate, died. That vehicle, carrying five people, hit a tree on the right side of the road. Two others involved in the accident were critically injured.
Bob Moore, Resident Engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said that his records show that there have been six traffic accidents on Route 729 (in between U.S. 211 and Route 618 where last week’s accident occurred) in the last year, with three fatalities. Even one fatality is too many, said Mr. Moore.
His department will be looking at the accident report, signage on the road, road conditions, and other factors to determine what can be done to make the road safer. Mr. Moore has been invited by the County Board of Supervisors to attend their June 2 meeting to discuss this subject. The meeting will be held at 2 p.m. at the courthouse in Washington.
The traffic count for the stretch of road in question was 502 daily in 1992, said Mr. Moore. He estimates that that figure has not gone up more than 10 percent since then.
