The May 14 edition of The Rappahannock News had five news stories on the front page. Three of the five stories were taken from the Fauquier Times-Democrat of the same date. The three Times-Democrat stories (headlined: Miller Discusses Mission of PEC, Candidates All Attend GOP Event, and Voters Survey Environment) were written by employees of the Arundel newspaper chain, not by staff members of The Rappahannock News. These borrowed Arundel-chain stories occupied the most prominent positions on the front page of our local paper, though they were not local news and were not produced by the staff of Rappahannock’s newspaper.
I subscribe to The Rappahannock News to get news about Rappahannock County, written by news people in Rappahannock County. I understand that our local newspaper is owned by the Arundel chain and that occasionally there is a story produced by other papers in the chain that is worth printing in The Rappahannock News. But when threefifths of. the front page of our local paper is dominated by news picked up from the corporate computers, we are losing the journalistic heart of The Rappahannock News — which is news by, for and about Rappahannock County people.
