This upcoming weekend we will be Celebrating Memorial Day and thus begins the All-American cookout seasop. It’s the family fun season. Children are ready for the swings, playhouse, sandbox, etc. Grownups think about picnic tables, yard furniture and, yes, the grill.

We use our grill year round, but this is the season when people dare to try something different and exciting. Once a co-worker in Warrenton told me several stories about cooking on her grill. The one I will always remember was about her son’s birthday, a terrible snow storm and she was without a birthday cake but worse, without electricity. She actually baked a cake on the grill. She shared how the secret to cooking on the grill was to use the lowest possible setting. Well, my expertise has never matched that story.

Hamburgers and hotdogs are definitely mainstay items for the grill. However, many experienced cooks do chicken, beef, rice, com-on-the-cob, and any number of stir-fry dishes. ; It’s also the baked bean and cold salad season. This week I contacted some Rappahannock cooks to get cookout recipes such as potato salad, chicken dishes, great bean recipes and other family favorites.
