Mark Pace, who is coach of the junior varsity soccer team at RCHS and is involved in the Rappahannock Soccer League, spoke to the board about having a girls’ soccer team at the high school. He brought 11 girls who now play on coed teams but would much rather see an all-girls’ team. Coming up this fall, said Coach Pace, there will be 24 or more females who will support a girls’ team.
Allison Lofton, who played on a girls’ team for three years before moving to Rappahannock, said that playing here against a boys’ team was really difficult. Other players also spoke up, mostly citing the differences between boys and girls physically, saying that lx>ys are stronger, rougher and have a lot more speed.
Dr. Gangel recommended that the board take the idea of a girls’ soccer team under advisement, and board member Bryant Lee asked for a breakdown of costs. Besides cost, the logistics of transportation and the use of the soccer field would have to be looked at, said Dr. Gangel.
RCES Principal Raye Tupper and English teacher Jon Heddleston gave a report on character virtues. Mrs. Tupper said that most of it is taught through literature at RCES and is included in daily activities as much as
