Preliminary reports from the Virginia Department of Education indicate that Rappahannock school students have made real progress in raising their Literacy Passport Test scores. a. \ ■ -
Althgugh Rappahannock County’s students were performing significantly below the Virginia statewide average on several key measures of student achievement in the 1995-96 school year, the first half of the 1996-97 year figures for sixth graders show that out of 78 students 62 passed all three components of the LPT. That is 79.48 percent compared to a state average of 70 percent.
Last year’s report showed less than half of the county’s sixth graders, 47 percent, passing all three components, far below the statewide average. That was down from 62 percent in the previous school year and 74 percent two years earlier.
