Tax Culprit
To the Editor:
With all the hoopla over the school budget and impending tax increase, it is of concern to see that many people seem to have missed the point, the point being that the State of Virginia has mandated changes in the public school curriculum in the form of “Standards of Learning” and “Standards of Accreditation.” At the same time, the State has cut funding for the schools.
This has created consternation throughout Virginia, as every county looks for ways to cope with the required changes which just happen to cost money. Requiring curriculum changes and forcing the counties to shoulder a larger share than before, the State of Virginia has created a double whammy effect on school budgets throughout the state.
The sad part about this is that a handful of people would prefer to tear down rather than build up the public school system. They are using the budget increase as a tool to denigrate administrators and School Board members who have worked hard to solve a problem created at the state level. This budget increase is not the fault of the school administration. If you are not happy about it, call or write the Governor and your state representative and ask them to restore school funding!
