Sperryville Fire Chief Richie Burke. “You can only do the work so long before you get burned out. I only have about 10 years left in me. And I have a family who needs me to spend time with them, too. I can’t spend all my free time fighting fires and running rescue. But the volunteers, the young people, they just aren’t there.”
Fire Chief Roger Roach of Washington Company 1 estimated that he and ijisuassistant chief, Ann Spieker,\each spend at least 40 volunteer hours a week handling administrative work and answering calls. In their spare time, both are full time paid firefighters with other counties.
Amissville Chief J.B. Carter has had hardly a day off in weeks — teaching or attending training classes, running the bingo games, planning the annual carnival or the Fire Prevention Week Open House. Carter is not the only member of his family deeply involved in fire and rescue work. His wife, Sandra, is an EMT and Company 3’s treasurer and budgeteer. His father, a retired Vint Hill employee, volunteers regularly as well.
