The scientific explanation of how all this happens is beyond my limited powers. I was a failure in physics class. I am satisfied with Rutherford Platt’s description of an unbroken “rope” of water, woven into countless threads, connecting the root tips in the ground to the leaves of the tree’s crown.
Evaporation at the top creates a vacuum that is quickly filled as more water is pulled upward. Maybe that explanar tion is too simple but it works for me. I am awed by the intricate beauty and perfection of roots, trunk, and leaves, the three departments of the “world’s greatest waterworks.”
