Their music is a combination of styles using a variety of instruments — a kind of chamber-folk. They began with lutes but have added the Celtic harp, guitar and uillean pipes (or Irish bagpipes) which are much softer and not harsh like the Scottish bagpipes.
Barnes has been playing guitar since he was 12 and took it up again. He has also had quite a bit of experience with classical guitar.
In the last five to six years, they have become interested in adding poetry to their repertoire. The poetry is read to the music of the harp and is usually by William Butler Keats or Seamus Heaney, both of whom were Irish and Nobel laureates.
The tradition of reading poetiy to music goes back to the Bardic traditions said Barnes. It brings back a dramatic element to the music.
“And since we don’t sing, it’s a wonderful interlude,” Barnes said. No piece is ever played without an introduction and they always tell a story with their pieces to interact with the audience.
