A better choice
Having made the car tax cut issue the main one
for his campaign, Republican gubernatorial
candidate Jim Gilmore should have been ready to spell out the details of that plan for rural counties like Rappahannock. '
The plan sounds too good to be true. In Rappahannock, where the remainder of the county’s budget comes from the personal property tax (real estate taxes go to pay for the schools) it’s scary to think we’ll have to rely on Richmond to keep its word and return those funds _ dollar for dollar.
What happens if they don’t? Will real estate taxes again be raised to fund part of the remainder of the county budget? Or, will part of the personal property tax be re-imposed by county officials? That would certainly make them out to be the “bad guys,” a fate they don’t deserve.
Would property owners be thrilled with another hike in real estate taxes to make up a deficit in the county budget? We can’t imagine they would.
If the candidates really want to take on a tax issue why not abolish the real property tax? Tax wealth equally instead.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Donald Beyer’s proposals seem more in tune with the future needs of ,this county.
However, we have another question for him: What ever happened to the promises to channel lottery money for education? Why not work on taking those funds out of the general fund and re-invest them in education.

' A fter having said Don Beyer is a better choice for /\ governor where Rappahannock is concerned, we X ^also have to say Republican incumbent Jay Katzen is the best choice for delegate from the 31st district. Katzen has the support of the county board qf supervisors and of the Rappahannock News.
He has been there for the county, and for individuals from this county, when called upon. I Similarly, we feel Mark Early of Chesapeake, Republican candidate for Attorney General works hard for what he believes in and gets it done. » You can’t ask more than that.
