to‘Why?’
On occasion, someone will
ask: “Why do you regularly support Republicans? Don’t you know both major parties have good people? That neither has a monopoly on ideas? That one year a Democrat may be the best person, next time a Republican?”
Yes, I know that. But, those points are not decisive.
One’s choice of parties is, or should be, made on the basis of a party’s beliefs, principles of government, political philosophy. £ My preferences for principles of government include:
“The less government we have, the better.” (Emerson)
Every citizen in a free country, to the best of his or her ability, accepts responsibility for his or her actions, education, health care, children and other dependents, and retirement; and does not expect others to carry these burdens, while recognizing that at times we’ll all need help.
The most productive and fair economic system is the free market. Governments’ roles should be limited to keeping “the playing field open to all, and level,” protecting personal safety and property rights.
Governments produce no wealth. Everything they consume or distribute is taken from productive workers.
