Instructional Reports
Jenny Stanley, seventh grade Rappahannock County Elementary School teacher, Corinne Smith, . RCES special education teacher and Eva Short, sixth grade RCES teacher, presented a report about the curriculum inservice they attended this summer. Seven teachers worked over the summer to try to make the Standards of Learning into curricula with specific, teachable and measurable objectives.
Stanley gave an overview of the language arts program and recognized four strands (important skills): oral language, reading, written language and research. The writing curriculum is being used this year, said Stanley, and teachers are being encouraged to write their comments.
Smith spoke about the main goals in reading: developing skills and developing a love for reading, both of which are considered important and incorporated in the curriculum.
Short spoke about the five domains of writing that are considered the basis of good writing: composing, style, sentence formation, usage and mechanics. The children become familiar with the terms as they are presented in each grade.
