residents is time. Rappahannock County covers 267 square miles, much of it accessible only via narrow two-lane country roads. Many hillside, ridgetop or forested properties are not accessible by emergency vehicles at all.
Prior to passing the fire levy, the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors considered consolidating the fire stations to cut expenses. Consolidation is again on the table as a means of dealing with personnel shortages. But fewer fire companies means fewer fire stations, and fewer fire stations mean more miles between the ones there are.
Ultimately, fewer firefighters will be available to actually fight the fires, creating greater risk for everyone concerned. Ironically, most firefighters say that the situation is even more critical on the rescue side.
“If there’s a fire,” said Burke, “you can usually get enough people to cover it ■ (because it is more visible and threatens multiple properties).”
