Wood devoted a large portion of his lecture to explaining the forest life cycle and species succession from open space to pioneer species to mature forest. “A forest lives and grows and breathes, and is always changing,” he emphasized again and again.
During an extensive question and answer period, Wood discussed topics such as tree pests and diseases, tree care, wildlife habitat, Oriental cultural interest in coffeewood trees, and “group selection clear-cutting,” a recommended alternative for extensive commercial logging. Both Wood and Harris also provided information concerning the status of the state and local Notable Tree programs and massive winter storm damage on the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive above the 2,500 foot elevation.
