“Successful communities think about what they want to look like in 20 years,” he said. “What do you want Sperryville, Washington and Flint Hill to look like in 20 years? Think about it and then think about a group of people to work on it,” he added. The community needs to develop a united vision of their identity, and the more people that are included, the more successful the effort will be. The community needs to identify places to preserve and places to develop.
Instead of thinking of progress and preservation in opposition to each other, the ideas need to be integrated. He mentioned that in order to preserve the rural character of a community — to protect historic places and natural environments and to maintain farming — growth must be directed to existing towns and new construction must respond to the local character. The twist is that it is good for business, good for farmers and good for the community.
