The recent and continuing publicity regarding the D.C. government’s deficiencies especially in the police department reminded me of my experience in 1970.
I was employed at the time at Catholic University and lived nearby in upper North East D.C.
I had planned to leave on Friday morning to participate in a weekend retreat that was being held in Annapolis, Md. As I stepped out of the shower the doorbell ringing announced that my ride was waiting. Now in a hurry, I left my ring in the bath room, finished dressing and rushed out the door.
“The Ring” has acquired a mystic importance to the graduates of the Naval Academy. The loss of ones class ring is very dramatic. The recovery of one is a big event.
The term Ring Knocker was applied to those officers in the Navy who wore the ring from those commissioned from other sources. The tradition seemed to imply that they were somewhat superior (or thought they were).
This did not seem to apply in the Marine Corps where I ended. The general feeling was the best officer source was from the ranks. The field commission was given to the highest ranking man left standing after the hill was taken, the mortars were quiet and the grenades no longer bouncing.
