Cheri Woodard, owner of Faith Mountain, said she liked McMahon’s ideas, however, she added that it is tough for people to always afford to do the right thing. “When we built our Butler (steel) building, it was not aesthetically pleasing, but it was all we could afford at the time. We added on the beautiful front later.” A county store owner, who asked not to be identified, doubted that business people would get their money back by renovating their stores.
McMahon showed slides of Estes Park, Colo, where trees planted on the main street enhanced stores’ appearances and within five years lead to a 23 percent increase in tax revenues.
McMahon said community character will deteriorate one building at a time or it will improve one building at a time. The Taco Bell in Fort Collins, Colo, in 1995 was a model M30. They wanted to tear down the old Taco. Bell and put a 1930 Spanish Colonial next to it and replace them with a larger M-60 model. The city required that they restore the house and that Taco Bell is now among the top five grossing Taco Bells in the United States.
