“One of the ways we get the money for conservation is for projects to become economic development projects,” McMahon said. “We try to demonstrate everything we do to show that conservation and economic development go hand in hand. I for one don’t think you can have a healthy environment unless you have an environmental conscience.”
Three of the Funds’ programs are the American Greenways Program that assists in the development of greenways and trails, the Freshwater Institute that develops economically feasible use of freshwater resources and the Land Advisory Service that provides land-use planning and assistance on land conservation and development.
Barbara Williams, Gateway secretary, said she looks forward to working with the whole community in the Piedmont District and invites them to attend the Gateway business meeting on June 4 and the planned monthly meeting on June 18. Both are at 7 p.m. at the Sperryville fire hall.
